Madison Children’s Museum Summer Day Camps 2009
Who: Children completing grades K–2
When: All camps meet Monday–Thursday. Add a Lunch Bunch option from Noon–1 p.m. to extend your camp time or to connect two programs into an all-day session.
June 22–25
Young Explorers (9 a.m.–noon)
Learn about animals, habitats, trees, life cycles and adaptations through hands-on exploration. Take a tree hike, visit the farmers market, draw conclusions from science experiments and investigate living organisms. Activities include “Trees of Wisconsin” (animal and insect habitats; wood materials and uses; model house-building; Capital Trees scavenger hunt); ”The Chicken or the Egg” (hatch chickens; egg-speriments; egg-decorating; bird species and adaptations); ”From Seed to Fruit” (plant seeds; visit farmers’ market; make vegetable prints); ”Worms and Insects” (discover, measure, and investigate live worms in the sensory table; make mini-vermiculture composters to bring home).
Art & Science Fusion (1–4 p.m.): SOLD OUT
Explore the natural intersections of science and art through creative experiments with light, color, perspective, and structure. Guest artists and scientists will join us throughout the week for indoor and outdoor projects to playfully engage both sides of the brain.
June 29–July 2
Kids Cook (9 a.m.-noon): SOLD OUT
Learn simple cooking techniques, make fun and healthy snacks, visit the downtown farmers’ market, and meet a local chef for a behind-the-scenes restaurant tour. Camp activities will be designed to accommodate special dietary needs.
Inventor’s Workshop (1–4 p.m.): SOLD OUT
Build, tinker and create! Learn about famous inventions, explore retro-technology, and create your own people-powered gadgets and gizmos out of reclaimed and salvaged materials.
July 6–9
Nature Photography (9 a.m.–noon): SOLD OUT
Learn the basics of photography and sketching in nature. This fun filled week will begin with a guided tour of the arboretum which will focus on wetlands, restored prairie and savannah and will allow time for photographing the landscape. We will also visit Driftless Studio, a nature based photography gallery in Fitchburg and see the many ways in which nature photography can be displayed. Anne Connor, owner of Driftless Studio, will join the camp on Monday and Tuesday to share her expertise of nature photography. We will also explore James Madison Park. During the week children will create sun prints, and hand-tinted photos. Disposable cameras, film processing and sketch book will be provided.
Go Green! (1–4 p.m.)
Combine adventure, math, arts, hands-on learning while coming up with new creative waysto save, recycle and use kid-power to work toward a sustainable future.
July 13–16
Ancient Greece: Togas, Tales, & Temples (9 a.m.–noon): SOLD OUT
Learn how ancient Greeks lived, ate, dressed, built, and played. Explore music, art and myth as we bring ancient Greece to life in this fun-filled camp. Each day will be filled with hands on activities to learn about ancient Greek life, art, democracy, myths and games. Activities will include making ancient musical instruments, pottery and crafts, water clocks, voting stones, and a large-scale temple. The camp will also include field trips to a local art museum and farmer’s market to see how modern life has been influenced by the Ancient Greeks. The final day of camp will conclude with Olympics Games and a feast!
August 24–27
Downtown Adventures I (9 a.m.–noon): SOLD OUT
Downtown Adventures II (1–4 p.m.): SOLD OUT
Get to know downtown Madison with a week of field trips, workshops and behind-the-scenes tours at popular downtown destinations. MCM staff will lead field trips each day to sites including Wisconsin Historical Museum, UW Space Place, Monona Terrace, Madison Museum of Contemporary Art, the Farmers’ Market, and the State Capitol. Registration fee includes all program fees and transportation. Morning and afternoon sessions will have different itineraries: combine both with the Lunch Bunch option to create a full-day camp experience.
Fee (per session): $70/museum member; $80/non-member
Lunch Bunch (optional): $20 per week. Extend the camp program with a supervised lunch hour and exhibit play break. Campers must bring their own lunches.
