History of the Benefit Sale
Madison Children’s Museum’s Annual Benefit Sale of American Girl Returns and Seconds began in 1988 and is a unique fund raising event coordinated by Madison Children’s Museum. The sale is made possible by American Girl through its in-kind donation of second and returned merchandise. Over 500 Madison Children’s Museum volunteers coordinate the Annual Benefit Sale, working to repair dolls, furniture and other accessories, and staffing the two-day sale.
The Benefit Sale itself is a two-day event that attracts 10,000 nationwide customers. Throughout the year, the volunteers of the Annual Benefit Sale repair and restore merchandise donated by the American Girl which the company has rejected as seconds or has accepted from customers as returns. This work continues weekly at a warehouse rented by Madison Children’s Museum. The donated American Girl merchandise consists of dolls and their books, craft kits, doll furniture and accessories, as well as an extensive line of girl’s clothing, books and accessories.
Funds raised in the past eighteen years amount to approximately $14 MILLION! Madison Children’s Museum currently receives 50% of the proceeds from each sale. The remaining proceeds support programs and services for children in Dane County through American Girl’s Fund for Children. Previous grant recipients include the Aldo Leopold Nature Center for Nature Net; the Madison Civic Center for Pleasant Company Onstage: A performing Arts Series for Children; The Dane County Cultural Affairs Commission; and dozens of other educational, arts, and cultural programs for children.
Goals of the Sale
As a fund raising endeavor, we strive to raise the maximum amount of money for Madison Children’s Museum and American Girl’s Fund for Children and thereby benefit children throughout Dane County.
As a business venture, we strive to provide quality products, efficient sales management, and competitive prices in order to continue building a satisfied and loyal customer base.
As a volunteer group, we strive to provide our fellow team workers with a positive and life-enhancing experience filled with shared accomplishments and achievements.
