Playing Around The World

Troops will complete the Playing Around the World Try-It while exploring games from many different countries as well as from Madison’s historical past:

  1. Games from other countries with the museum’s World Games collection
  2. Outdoor games on the Capitol lawn, including Alaskan Baseball and Red Light Green Light
  3. Historical and Native American games in the museum’s 1838 log cabin

Who: Brownie Girl Scouts

When: Saturday, October 2, 1–3 p.m. (includes a play break in the museum’s exhibits. Troops may stay after the workshop to further explore the museum).

Cost: $7 per girl, does not include Try-It patch (troop leaders should order patches for participants)

Plants and Animals

Explore the world of plants and animals on the Rooftop Ramble at the new Madison Children’s Museum.  Go for a scavenger hunt at the Dane County Farmer’s Market and make a fun seed project that you can take home and plant in your garden. Please dress for the weather! At this workshop you will complete three activities toward the Plants & Animals Badge:

  1. Plants here there everywhere
  2. Seed art
  3. What a pest!

Who: Junior Girl Scouts

When: Saturday, October 9, 10 a.m.–noon (includes a play break in the museum’s exhibits. Troops may stay after the workshop to further explore the museum).

Building Art

Troops will complete the Building Art Try-It by creating blueprints for what the Children’s Museum may look like 100 years from now; constructing 3-D building models for a collective cityscape, and creating drawings showing changes in buildings to accommodate a variety of different special needs.

Nature All Around Us

Daisy Troops will enjoy an hour of self-guided exhibit exploration and a half-hour facilitated program. Explore animals, plants and nature and learn about animal habitats, diet, and handling, while making a pretend animal and habitat to bring home.

Plants

Troops will complete the Plants Try-It with hands-on experiments. Explore the world of plants on the Rooftop Ramble at the Madison Children’s Museum.  Plant your own seeds to take home and watch them grow.  Hunt for leaves on the rooftop and make a leafy art project to take home.

Science in Action

Troops will complete the Science in Action Try-It with hands-on experiments:

  1. Science and Technology hunt: troops will go on a scavenger hunt throughout the museum looking for examples of technology at work.
  2. Weird Glop- learn how certain things are not just liquid, solid or gas but a combination of them with this simple experiment.
  3. Elephant Toothpaste: make a big splash with this experiment that shows a chemical reaction and breakdown of common household ingredient –Hydrogen Peroxide.

Discovery Boxes

Daisy Troops will enjoy an hour of self-guided exhibit exploration and a half-hour facilitated program. Daisies will have a chance to make a discovery box with found objects. The discovery box will help tell a story about each individual child and their interests.

Art to Wear

Troops will complete the Art to Wear Try-It. Bring a t-shirt from home to decorate, create a paper maché bowl out of recycled paper, and use a variety of materials and knotting techniques to make a macramé project.

Theatre

Bring a play or script that you might want to perform as a troop. In this badge workshop you will learn acting exercises, costume design, and theater makeup and techniques to help support your performance that would be done on your own. At this workshop you will complete three activities toward the Theatre badge.

  1. Theater games and exercises for voice and movement
  2. Theater Make up Design: Use face templates to draw and design character makeup designs and then practice on each other.
  3. Costume designs: Simple sewing and design techniques to make a few simple costume items.

Popsicle Puppets

Daisy Troops will enjoy an hour of self-guided exhibit exploration and a half-hour facilitated program. Daisies will make popsicle stick puppets using a variety of fabric for the clothes, popsicle sticks and paper. They can use their puppets to put on a puppet show.

Toymaker

Make a simple toy to take home, play games from around the world and create a unique game to take home. Examine toys made from reclaimed and recycled objects and design a recycled toy. Troops will learn what types of toys come from different cultures and compare and contrast similarities to today’s toys from those 50 and 100 years ago.

At this workshop you will complete three activities toward the Toymaker badge.

Folk Arts

Troops will learn about “samplers” and other traditional art forms that were created by girls 100 years ago.  Learn about toys from long ago through images and oral stories.  Girls will have the opportunity to create their own folk art product using hand made items. At this workshop you will complete three activities toward the Folk Arts Badge:

World Neighbors

At this workshop, troops will complete three activities toward the World Neighbors Badge:

  1. Global Games- use tubs to learn different games from around along with basic phrases the world as well as games from Native Americans and early settlers in Madison.
  2. Love of Language- learn how to say basic phrases and counting in French and German.
  3. There’s no place like Home: Learn how landscape, climate, culture and natural resources have impacted housing designs around the world, specifically the Mongolian Yurt—also a tour of the log cabin and learning how early settlers to Madison used natural materials and old world techniques to build the log cabin.Who: Junior Girl Scouts

Troops will complete the Earth and Sky Try-It. Discover the many wonders in the soil below our feet and in the sky above our heads on the Rooftop Ramble at the Madison Children’s Museum.  Look up into the sky from high above the city and make a cloud inspired art project to take home. Please dress for the weather!
